About the movie:

John Paul and Wayne are two young men in search of their fathers.  Problem is . . . their fathers have been dead for 25 years.  Eddie and Steven are two young men in search of their sons . . . whom they've never met.  In 1969, Eddie and Steven are with their squad deep in the jungle of Vietnam on a five-day mission to retrieve fallen comrades.  They write letters to their wives, often mentioning their love for their sons, one, who is an infant and one yet to be born.  In 1994, John Paul and Wayne go on a five day road trip to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC to see their fathers' names.  Along the way, reading those letters, they begin to get an understanding of who their fathers were and how they died.  Trials and mishaps, both funny and sad, complicate the road trip for the boys.  The horrors of war and the testing of faith manifest themselves for the young men in Vietnam.  Ultimately, in parallel stories - 25 years apart - the fathers and sons are bound together forever.

Kirk Cameron's Unstoppable DVD {Review and Giveaway}

You may remember Kirk Cameron from his role as "Mike Seaver" on Growing Pains back in the 80's or maybe as his role in Fireproof in 2008 or most recently from his film Monumental which came out last year. He's back with a new film: Unstoppable, Where is God in the Midst of Tragedy and Suffering? This film was only in theaters for two weeknights (September 24 and October 3, 2013) and grossed over $3.2 million dollars. In just two nights, this independent project sent a very loud message - audiences are longing for thought-provoking and meaningful entertainment.

The film was inspired by the death of 15 year old Matthew Sandgren, son of James and Marci Sandgren, friends of the Cameron family. When a cancer diagnosis is given, when a child dies, when facing suffering, we may ask "where is God?" or "why didn't God heal him?" or other weighty questions. These are the questions Kirk asked, as well, which led him to go back to the very beginning to look at who God is, where man and woman began, where evil came into the picture. And this is where the documentary suddenly takes a surprising and beautiful twist. All of the sudden, we are taken back to the Garden of Eden. The cinematography is stunning. The portrayal of God creating Adam and Eve evoked quite a few "WOW"s from my crew and me. The serpent was portrayed very creatively (and yes, still creepily). I almost wish that there were more of these biblical scenes scattered throughout the film. Maybe there will be in future film projects. I appreciate the fresh and imaginative perspective. The music is also beautiful and suitable to the different scenes. We had never heard of Warren Barfield but will be looking up his other music, as we loved his song "The Time Is Now" featured on this DVD.

I watched this film with four of my five children. We highly recommend it. (The scene portraying Cain and Abel is graphic and not suitable for young children.) I am thankful that Kirk didn't choose to just say "God is good. God is sovereign. We just have to accept the bad with the good," as is so prevalent in our American Christian culture. Yes, God is sovereign and good. Absolutely. But Kirk goes deeper. He goes to the beginning, back to the garden, to the dirt. He talks about how evil entered, man's response and responsibility, Noah, the tower of Babel, Jesus - where everything changed,  and concludes that through going on this journey, he is more confident than ever that life wins over death, good wins over evil and light wins over darkness. Life is hard. Life is full of challenges, grief and suffering, but God and His character and promises and purposes are unstoppable.

This Is Our TIme DVD {Review + Giveaway}

I had the opportunity to review This Is Our Time over the weekend. At first, I admit to thinking it was a little "cheesy," but that soon changed. Though the story is about five recent university grads, I found myself to relating to them in several ways, even though I am well passed {ahem} that age. I originally thought I would love this movie because I love university students and did life with so many of them in Canada. But because this movie included so many just regular life events, that we all do or could do at any point in our lives, it struck me as very believable and relate-able. 

I cried through several sections of this movie (don't worry, no spoilers). It was very touching. I certainly know God's call on my life and have heard Him clearly many times. We have recently been through a major change (moving back to the States) due to hearing His call and responding in obedience to Him. But since being here, I have greatly struggled with the purpose for His moving me here. Why am I here? What is my purpose here? I don't have any definitive answers quite yet, but I trust Him and know they will come. I know He has led us here for a specific reason (and probably multiple reasons), so I continue seeking His face and waiting on Him. 

And whether you are in high school or university, have recently graduated or are even older than I am (haha!), I recommend this movie. See below for giveaway info.

Abel's Field {Review + Giveaway}

About Abel's Field

Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light.

My Review
Seth McArdle is a 17 year old boy with the weight of the world on his shoulders. His mother has died, his father has abandoned him and his 7 year old twin sisters. He is the target of abuse from the star football player and his cronies. Bills are piling up and Seth already works two jobs in addition to going to high school. Because Seth is blamed for the the fights with the football bullies, he is assigned the "job" of  putting in the new sprinkler system for the football field, alongside a mysterious janitor named Abel.

In Abel's Field, we see Seth struggle with whether or not he believes in God. He prayed for his mother to be healed. She died. In spite of a caring pastor who tries to reach out to Seth, the struggle continues. Abel seems to be the only one who understands Seth and they form a special bond.

I don't want to give away too many of  the details. There is heartache, laughter, tears, challenge and inspiration in this film. There were a few intense scenes in a couple of spots, due to the beating up of Seth, his temptation with committing a crime and the brief disappearance of his little sisters. But it is an inspiring story. One that has to work out those ugly kinks of pride and relying on oneself before the relief of becoming desperate and calling out for help comes. And it does come. Don't miss this film of redemption and hope.
