Kirk Cameron's Unstoppable DVD {Review and Giveaway}

You may remember Kirk Cameron from his role as "Mike Seaver" on Growing Pains back in the 80's or maybe as his role in Fireproof in 2008 or most recently from his film Monumental which came out last year. He's back with a new film: Unstoppable, Where is God in the Midst of Tragedy and Suffering? This film was only in theaters for two weeknights (September 24 and October 3, 2013) and grossed over $3.2 million dollars. In just two nights, this independent project sent a very loud message - audiences are longing for thought-provoking and meaningful entertainment.

The film was inspired by the death of 15 year old Matthew Sandgren, son of James and Marci Sandgren, friends of the Cameron family. When a cancer diagnosis is given, when a child dies, when facing suffering, we may ask "where is God?" or "why didn't God heal him?" or other weighty questions. These are the questions Kirk asked, as well, which led him to go back to the very beginning to look at who God is, where man and woman began, where evil came into the picture. And this is where the documentary suddenly takes a surprising and beautiful twist. All of the sudden, we are taken back to the Garden of Eden. The cinematography is stunning. The portrayal of God creating Adam and Eve evoked quite a few "WOW"s from my crew and me. The serpent was portrayed very creatively (and yes, still creepily). I almost wish that there were more of these biblical scenes scattered throughout the film. Maybe there will be in future film projects. I appreciate the fresh and imaginative perspective. The music is also beautiful and suitable to the different scenes. We had never heard of Warren Barfield but will be looking up his other music, as we loved his song "The Time Is Now" featured on this DVD.

I watched this film with four of my five children. We highly recommend it. (The scene portraying Cain and Abel is graphic and not suitable for young children.) I am thankful that Kirk didn't choose to just say "God is good. God is sovereign. We just have to accept the bad with the good," as is so prevalent in our American Christian culture. Yes, God is sovereign and good. Absolutely. But Kirk goes deeper. He goes to the beginning, back to the garden, to the dirt. He talks about how evil entered, man's response and responsibility, Noah, the tower of Babel, Jesus - where everything changed,  and concludes that through going on this journey, he is more confident than ever that life wins over death, good wins over evil and light wins over darkness. Life is hard. Life is full of challenges, grief and suffering, but God and His character and promises and purposes are unstoppable.

  13. I am a Christian mom of 3, 2 with disabilities. I have had many opportunities to have a firsthand witness of both how hard life can be and God's faithfulness. Hard times such as the murder of my closest niece, the death of my 40yr old sister to cancer & having 1 child with seizures, psychological issues & Autism & another child who has Autism & was non-verbal for many years have been great challenges our family has had to overcome. My struggle is not in questioning if God can, but if God will. I have seen miracles God has performed, as well as times I wanted a different answer to the struggles I faced. It is not an easy journey & at times I still face doubts. It is then I have to remind myself of God's miracles & mercies & of His promises in His word.

  16. I have 9 children and have homeschooled all of them. I have 2 that are still being schooled in my home. I struggle the most with the decisions my adult kids make and that I know I taught them the Word of God and how can they chose that. Then I remember God was a perfect parent and his children rebelled and I thank Him for giving me the example of loving me IN my sin not just when I don't.

  17. I am "unschooling" my 8 and 13 year old children and we are loving it!!!
    It has truly been a blessing to spend the time together in God's word and watch them grow!
    My relationship with my husband has also flourished ever more than I could have ever imagined. We spend more time together as a family in HIS word than with the worries of this world. Enjoying the journey!

  20. My Faith was really challenged in 2007/2008. Thanksgiving my dad got ill. Christmas Day went into hospital. New Year's Day transferred to nursing home. January 14 told he was not going to live much longer -- he wouldn't eat or drink (later found out they weren't taking care of him). January 16 brought home for hospice care. January 18 passed away. January 22 half brother came down for funeral. January 24 kicked brother out of my house for verbally attacking my mother on the day of her husband's funeral. January 28 turned 36 -- not a happy birthday. Hard to keep Faith when dealing so much at once. Then may 1st I was told I had fibromyalgia and would never work again. Harder still to keep Faith when your world falls apart.

  22. I am also a homeschooling mother of 3. I will tell you about a time of strength in the faith. October 2012 my brother died of a massive heartattack, I worked cpr on him for 20 minutes before help arrived but to no avail. November 2012 1 month after my brothers death, my father passed away. At both funerals I was able to witness through the strength that Christ provided me with and to share with people the hope of the blessed gospel that gave me peace.

  23. I believe in God, Jesus and the holy spirit. I believe God hears because he heard my prayers from me when I prayed for my mother. She was in a coma because of a hit to her head when she fell in her house. I asked God and his angels to help her get better and Thank the Lord she did.

  24. Hi Scarlett, I am a homeschooling mom of 6 kids. I've been walking with the Lord for nearly 40 years. While I have a Biblical worldview, much of my extended family does not. This DVD would help me to explain some things to them.

  32. Hello,
    We are a family of 5, and leave on East Coast.
    Last October I took my 14 year old daughter to Switzerland and we did the grape harvest together at some friends'.
    While picking the grapes over there, we met a French guy who was not a believer and who told me: "Look at those beautiful Alps! I am not Christian, and yet when at look at that I think there must be a creator". I promised him next year I'll show him the movie Unstoppable to challenge his view.

  33. Hi! I would love to win this DVD. Our family has been through a lot over the last several years: a cheating husband (who is now out of the picture), the children & I have lost our home, spent time without a car, were homeless for 7 months, church friends have turned on us,now live 30 miles away in a town we really don't like, because of the distance friends never visit & we have no money to make the drive to visit them, etc. BUT, God has given us a truck & a home that is ours. We have our health, & we have each other. I have always tried to teach my children to look for the silver lining, because even when things are at their darkest, God always provides a silver lining.
